Welcome to our website. God is doing wonderful things here at Carter Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. I am elated you are sharing with us and we welcome your feedback. We always strive for excellence for Carter is God'’s servant!

At Carter, we believe in extending beyond the walls of our church and out into the community. It is our vision that through faith and works we can change the community one person at a time.

Our Worship Celebration is held at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday. We also have Study with The Pastor Tuesday nights -- –a live event that begins at 6:30 p.m. Each worship experience allows us the pleasure of expanding our relationship with God while ushering in His presence. I am convinced you will find worship at Carter to be inspiring, inviting, spiritually enriching, and culturally relevant. Come worship with us and let God use you how He sees fit!

Carter Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is a family tradition for many, and a home to all that enter its doors. Rich in over 95 years of history, Carter was built on a solid foundation of faith and the Love for God's kingdom. We believe in outreach through prayer and hard work. We have many activities that allow us to touch the lives of those in need spiritually and physically, from meals, education, community events, and international missions.Carter is a church that believes in extending beyond our walls and reaching into the community. We are working to build God's kingdom through spreading His gospel, witnessing and sharing our talents through our many ministries. In this we hope to change the community one person at a time. At Carter, there is something for everyone from the youngest to the oldest. Our ministries encourage involvement allowing everyone to find their own way to serve God.Carter's Creed and symbol, the Sankofa bird, tells the story of our church, a body that uses experiences from the past to guide us to the future. From the country of Ghana, the Sankofa's head is always turned backwards, thus "facing the past". The Sankofa represents the old African adage "Always remember the past for therein lies the future, if forgotten..." we are destined to repeat it. Sankofa is an Akan term that means, "to go back and get it".(san = "to return") + (ko = "to go") + (fa = "to look, to seek and take"). Visually and symbolically, "Sankofa" is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. This ties with our motto: "In order to understand our present and ensure our future, we must know our past."

Our History

History
Carter Tabernacle CME Church has been in existence for over 95 years. In this time, the church has been blessed to see both spiritual and membership growth. From the very beginning, the hand of the Lord was and STILL is upon the Carter Tabernacle church family. In 1916, what we now know as Carter was started in what was then known as "The Grove" in the beautiful city of Orlando, Florida by several Christian Methodist Episcopal families who relocated from Georgia.They first affiliated with Mt. Olive CME Church and later decided to establish a new church in the groves of Pepper Hill. Because of the faithfulness of God to His people, he blessed them and the church grew. God equipped the church with skilled pastors and lay persons with the knowhow and resources to build. By His grace, and with strong commitment and dedication, a new edifice was erected at 912 West Bentley Street in 1924.The membership grew to approximately 300 members by 1935. By focusing on prayer, and establishing prayer bands and emphasizing sound teaching to both adults and children, the church was able to meet the needs of the whole person. In 1976, the Carter Tabernacle church family embarked on another faith journey and transplanted the church to 1 South Cottage Hill Road.The church has continued to flourish with many ministries. Due to growth, the church expanded, increasing from 800 to a 1500 sanctuary seating capacity. To serve the people better, additional facilities were needed as well, including a prayer chapel, classrooms, bookstore, and nursery. Our membership continues to flourish and Carter Tabernacle is still known as a family church.

Our Pastor

Our Pastor
Reverend Dr. Vanessee J. Burns is the daughter of the late Henry and Florence Burns and is presently the God-given daughter of Brenda Springs of Greenville, SC. She has graduated from the following: Thomasville High, Thomasville, Georgia; University of Georgia, Athens, B.A. English; Phillips School of Theology at the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, M. Div.; Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, NC, D. Min with her Doctoral Project titled: "Building an Effective Pastoral Leadership Team in the CME Church: Restoring the Voice of the Silent". She is a certified Clinical Counselor; her clinical training includes a year's residency with the Georgia Department of Corrections; one year at the VA Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia; and one year with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, Anderson, SC. She has served in the Pastoral and Clinical ministries for approximately 20 years.Within the CME Church she has served in many capacities. In the Carolina Region she has twice served as a delegate to the General Conference; the Dean of the ITC Continuing Education Certificate Program; Secretary of the Committee on Ministerial Examination; and Editor of the Seventh Epistle: The official news communiqué of the Seventh Episcopal District. Presently she serves as Florida Region Chairperson of the Committee on Ministerial Examination, and the District Coordinator of the Ministerial Developmental Institute. She was also elected to serve as a clergy delegate to the 2010 General Conference.In the community, Pastor Burns is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In 2005, she was appointed by the Mayor of Charlotte, NC to the Citizens Review Board where she served as the Chairperson. This board receives and reviews complaints made by the citizens of Charlotte against the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The board forwards their decisions to the Chief of Police. She is a member of the Orlando Health Community Council on Spirituality and Healing and the African-American Council of Christian Clergy.Pastor Burns has a desire to see God's love spread both home and abroad. In this endeavor, she has led five missionary teams to Jamaica, Haiti, and Nigeria. These missionary teams distributed food, clothing, toiletries, and school supplies; they repaired buildings and provided medical treatment. Under Pastor Burns's auspices a school is presently being built in Nsit Atai, Nigeria (The Carter Tabernacle School of Nsit Atai). Since her inception at Carter, over twenty-seven new and active ministries have been formed. The majority of these ministries are to help meet the needs of persons outside the walls of the church.Pastor Burns holds fast to the belief that true teaching should be done by both precept and example. A church should strive to be relevant in its teaching and applications of the gospel. In this relevance, people might come to know the God who loved us enough to send us Jesus Christ.

Our Elder

Our Elder
Roscoe C. McKinney began his preaching career at the age of 20 when he began preaching at the St. Johns Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CMEC), Detroit, Michigan, the Reverend Joseph H. Henderson, pastor. Licensed to preach by Presiding Elder W. H. Crenshaw in 1972, where he served until 1974 when he was admitted into Full Connection in the Southeast Missouri-Illinois Annual Conference. A believer in preparation, Rev. McKinney received a BS in Psychology from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. A loyal and dedicated member of the CMEC Rev. McKinney'’s lengthy pastoral career spans over 33 years. His illustrious career has been highlighted by Rev. McKinney’'s ardent contributions to the committees to which he has been assigned as an elected delegate to seven (7) General Conferences. As a delegate he has served on the Episcopal, Finance, Revisions, Itinerancy and Boundaries Committees.On the Annual Conference level Rev. McKinney has contributed invaluable input on the Joint Board in each of the Annual Conferences where he pastored. In addition, he has held the position of Assistant Secretary of the SE Missouri-Indiana Conference, Chairman of the Committee On Ministry in the California Conference and Vice-Chair and Chair of the Joint Board of the Florida Region Annual Conference.As much as Pastor McKinney was committed to providing leadership to his pastoral assignments, he has also been passionately committed to the process of reconciliation and healing of congregations which have been impacted by a split. Because of his leadership and administrative skills he was able to lead Williams Memorial into a campaign to purchase a parsonage. He has also devoted himself to developing new ministers into effective workers in the church. Rev. McKinney is a concerned advocate for the members of the communities where he has served and has worked tirelessly as a Community Activist and Community Organizer. He has been awarded Pastor of the Year and his church named Church of the Year in the Miami-Tampa District. At the 2007 Florida Region Annual Conference, Presiding Bishop L.L. Reddick appointed Rev. McKinney as Presiding Elder of the Historic Jacksonville-Orlando District. Rev. Roscoe McKinney is married to Mary Campbell McKinney and is the father of Roscoe C. McKinney, III and grandfather to Quincey D. McKinney.

Our mission is to provide (2) college scholarships, an after-school tutorial and educational program that is aligned to the Sunshine State Standards and to augment the daily curriculum of our students, which will produce higher performance on the FCAT and at the college level.

At Carter we strive to honor the Lord with our "first fruits" (see Proverbs 3:9) as we give "cheerfully, generously, and regularly" (see 2 Cor. 9:6-7) . We express this by giving of our tithes and offerings during the "Worship Through Giving" portion of our service, by mailing our contribution to the office, or by donating via the internet. We encourage you to give as God leads.

Just as many people choose to pay their mortgages or utility payments each month through automatic withdrawals from their checking or savings accounts, we also provide you the opportunity to give by having a pre-determined amount deducted automatically from a pre-arranged account. Welcome and thanks for being here!Whether just curious or seriously considering a church home, you are welcomed at Carter. Most visitors are interested in knowing what to expect when arriving on Sunday morning. Below, is some information to help make your visit a wonderful occasion.Worship Service Worship begins at 10:00 a.m., with the exception of 1st Sundays when there are 2 opportunities to celebrate worship, 7:45am and 10:00am. Each service includes a sermon and a variety of praise and music ministry, except for production Sundays. All services generally follow a worship guide outline which will help you understand how we do things. Feel free to bring your bible but if not the scripture reading is located in the worship guide. We offer Children's Church on 1st - 3rd Sundays and Youth Church 2nd and 3rd Sundays. Regardless of your choice of worship times, its best to arrive about 15 minutes early to allow time to find your way and children's activity. Find Your Way Greeters and Ushers are ready to answer questions and help. Just look for them at the doors and in the halls. Theyll be waiting for you to arrive before worship.Celebrate Through Worship Ushers will welcome you into the sanctuary and provide a worship guide outlining the service. They will also help you to find seating and answer questions.Finding Carter Get Directions Church Office HoursOur offices are open, Mondays 1:30-4:30 p.m. and Tuesdays-Thursdays 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. A Little History Carter has been an integral part of the Orlando community for over 95 years. Although our physical location has changed, we are dedicated to changing the community one person at a time, Carter's History. Midweek ServicesWe offer Tuesday Night Study with the Pastor at 6:30 p.m. as well as Youth Bible Study. You are invited to participate, learn, and enjoy a powerful discussion on relevant topics addressing situations we face and discover how we can overcome these situations through our faith. We also have a Tuesday mid-day prayer service that meets at noon.Copies of the SermonServices can be viewed online. We also make all the services available on CD and DVD, immediately following worship. Past sermons, series and teachings can be ordered at the CT Store. In the CommunityCarter is committed to changing our community, one person at a time. We extend ourselves into the local community with various feedings and outreach programs, providing meals, prison outreach, educational opportunities via Drop back In, as well as resources to families within the community, including scholarships to students and many other individuals who are in need of assistance. In addition, we are partnering with Washington Shores Elementary volunteering and mentoring. Ultimately, our purpose for serving those in need is to glorify God, by ushering in His presence and to bring souls to Christ. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Please make sure to READ THE LABEL when purchasing packaged, canned or bottled foods. They should be sugar-free and chemical-free. Keep this in mind as you review this list of acceptable foods.Foods to include in your diet during the Daniel FastAll fruits. These can be fresh, frozen, dried, juiced or canned. Fruits include but are not limited to apples, apricots, bananas, blackberries, blueberries, boysenberries, cantaloupe, cherries, cranberries, figs, grapefruit, grapes, guava, honeydew melon, kiwi, lemons, limes, mangoes, nectarines, oranges, papayas, peaches, pears, pineapples, plums, prunes, raisins, raspberries, strawberries, tangelos, tangerines, and watermelon.All vegetables. These can be fresh, frozen, dried, juiced or canned. Vegetables include but are not limited to artichokes, asparagus, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chili peppers, collard greens, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, garlic, ginger root, kale, leeks, lettuce, mushrooms, mustard greens, okra, onions, parsley, radishes, rutabagas, scallions, spinach, sprouts, squashes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips, watercress, white potatoes, yams, zucchini, veggie burgers and soy products are an option if you are not allergic to soy and if they do not include eggs, yeast or sweeteners. All whole grains, including but not limited to whole wheat, brown rice, white rice, millet, quinoa, oats, barley, grits, cream of wheat, whole wheat pasta, rice cakes and popcorn. Pasta as long as it does not include eggs or sweetener. Unleavened bread and whole wheat tortillas such as pita or wraps as long as it has NO yeast.All nuts and seeds, including but not limited to sunflower seeds, cashews, peanuts, sesame. Also peanut butter that does not include any processed oils, additives or sugars.All legumes. These can be canned or dried.
